Rie Muñoz

A gifted artist and enthusiast of Alaskan culture, Rie Muñoz (re moo nyos) depicts the splendor of day-to-day life in her artwork. Her ability to capture the simplistic beauty of everyday activities such as berry picking or fi shing has attracted admirers from around the world.

Rie Muñoz, a Dutch American, was born and raised in California. She became a permanent resident of Alaska following a steamboat trip to Juneau in 1950. Her immediate love for the Alaskan landscape has inspired over 50 years of original artistry. Though she paints in her studio in Juneau, Muñoz fi nds most of her material through her travels to remote Alaskan communities.

Muñoz’s latest book, “Alaska Through the Eyes of an Artist,” debuted on Aug. 17, 2005, the same day as the artist’s 84th birthday. Her new book presents a wonderful collection of her past and current watercolor paintings. Accompanied with Muñoz’s previous book, “Portrait of Alaska,” fans of the artist will have access to all of the 454 images she has published in the past 36 years.

Fuel Dock
24 3/4" x 8 1/2"
600 edition
$175
A number of years ago I spent several weeks in the picturesque fishing village of Pelican, sketching most everything in sight! I’ve done a number of paintings from my sketches and most recently, Pelican Fuel Dock. People asked me, “Why are all those oil drums lined up on the dock.” I had no clue. I called several people from Pelican and finally got an answer from a long time friend. “Waste fuel” she said, “from fishing boats and other vessels is stored in them and periodically hauled away,.. or not.” --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ella D.
12" x 7 3/4"
600 edition
$120
The Ella D. is approaching port. She’ll sell her fish to the local fish buyer, refuel, stock up on groceries and head back out to the fishing grounds. It’s a busy time during the commercial fishing season.

Commercial King Crabbers
11 3/4" x 7 1/4"
550 edition
$90
This scene took place in mid January when it’s icy cold in SE Alaska. It is also the time when the King Crab ‘shallow up’ from 500-1200ft of water to 100’. They can also be seen ‘balling up’ in even shallower water. Hundreds of King Crab grab on to each other in a huge writhing ball which moves slowly across the ocean floor. If you have the fortune of getting one, you’ll want to hold them the right way, otherwise, OUCH!

Field Flowers
4" x 4 3/8"
750 edition
$50
I'll have to admit that winter on the Central Coast of California is more colorful than the grey and wet days of our SE Alaska rainforest. I visited family and friends there last year; field flowers everywhere! I picked these and put them on my painting desk. It wasn't long before they inspired this painting.

High and Dry
8 3/4" x 5 3/4"
550 edition
$85
This abandoned fishing boat on the Kenai Peninsula was my inspiration for a painting back in 2001. I returned recently and it was gone or so I thought. Actually the wild celery and other shrubs had grown to such height that only the mast and very top of the cabin were visible.

King Crab
5 1/4" x 7"
700 edition
$75
Tenakee Inlet is noted for it's abundant sea life. The local fishermen are very generous and often give away part of their catch if you're in the right place at the right time. I took the small one on the left. On another occasion a large tote of fresh halibut heads were left on the dock for anybody who wanted to cut out the cheeks. Yummy!

Candidate & Kids
13 1/4" x 8 "
650 edition
$130
Fall colors in Juneau are always lovely especially on a crisp sunny morning. Mountain Ash trees not only change color but are high-lighted by numerous clusters of bright red berries much appreciated by the local bird population. The kids in this painting are uninterested in this beauty or the political message

Coming into Port
11 1/2" x 6 1/2"
750 edition
$100
This commercial fishing boat is returning home to Sitka with its hold full of salmon. Keen eyed fishermen can tell if the skipper is bringing in a big load by how low the boat is riding in the water. I like to judge by the amount of escort seagulls the boat has but I am told that is immaterial.

Priest & Cat
10" x 11"
750 edition
$135
The Russian Orthodox Church at Ninilchik (pop. 597) is perched high on a hill overlooking the small fishing village in a half moon bay on Cook Inlet. The official name is “The Transfiguration of Our Lord Russian Orthodox Church” and services began in 1846. In late summer the fireweed surrounds this beautiful church. The red cat followed me around as I was sketching and thus became part of the painting.
