Charles Wysocki
1928-2002
Charles Wysocki was a prime example of "The American Dream." A first-generation American, Wysocki, of Polish heritage, was born in Detroit. He grew up in a community comprised mostly of immigrants who took great pride and pleasure in celebrating the traditions of their new homeland. These joyous opportunities and celebrations offered by American freedom became the theme of what Wysocki would remember and portray in his art.
Each painting warmly describes in delightful detail the colorful diversity of pre-modern America. Mr. Wysocki's work is a celebration of bygone days. His paintings, with wit and grace, capture a storybook era when hard work and quiet pleasures represented the very best of what our country has come to mean. Careful observers will often see the American flag on display in these nostalgic images. The flag does not hang limply on the pole, but stands out proudly on an imaginary breeze, an on-going salute from the artist to his beloved country.
In Mr. Wysocki's book, An American Celebration, he states, "I am a proud American and my desire is to stress the positive images of our country and its people." Through his capture and expression of the iconic lifestyles of our country's birth, Mr. Wysocki has done exactly what he hoped to do. His Americana art sends a message to each and every one of us. That message is of love-of country, people and the arts.
In 1999, Charles Wysocki was named "Master Artist" and "One of America's Most Popular Artists" by U.S. Art magazine. He was also named as one of America's "Top 25 Best-Selling Artists" in 2002 by Décor magazine.
